The 411 on Kiwis

When you think of vitamin C and boosting your immune system, you probably think of oranges, but did you know kiwi fruits have almost three times the amount of vitamin C that one orange does? Not only are they high in vitamin C but they are also packed with so many other nutrients.

Kiwis originate from China, where they were originally called “Chinese gooseberries.” However, they were introduced in Australia in 1904 and were renamed “kiwis” after the national bird of Australia for their similarities (we’ll let you be the judge of that).

Kiwis are known for their brown, fuzzy skin, similar to a peach, with green flesh and tiny seeds inside. They are often eaten raw or in smoothies and are also a popular snack for many wildlife animals!

Kiwis are packed with antioxidants that can help remove free radicals in the body that result in oxidative stress if not regulated. Over time, this can lead to diseases or cancer within the body, so getting enough antioxidants in your diet is crucial.

Vitamin C, one of the many antioxidants provided by kiwis, is not only amazing for your immune system but also has many other health benefits. Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen which benefits your skin and hair health. Kiwis also offer vitamin E which can also boost your skin health, specifically against sun damage.

One thing we could all use more of? Sleep. And kiwis might be the answer! Kiwis are known to aid better sleep. Scientists have not fully cracked this one, but they believe it has to do with the high amount of antioxidants and serotonin kiwis provide the body.
